Some knowledge of massage modalities and energy systems will help you better understand Hands On Touch, and increase your massage benefits.  Here follow a few definitions:

Reflexology

Reflexology ChartBased on the theory that applying pressure to specific area on the feet, hands, ears can affect internal organs and body systems and therefore promote good health. Reflexology evolved from the work of Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, a US ear, nose, and throat surgeon in the early 1900's.

Reflexology treatments tends to be extremely relaxing as well as stimulating as deep pressure is applied to particular spots (or reflex points) on the hands and feet which correspond to particular organs and glands.

All my massages begin with a gentle foot massage.  Then, depending on one's feet sensitivity, I will massage with deeper strokes for added enjoyment.

Swedish Massage

Hands On HealingSwedish massage is what most people think of when we hear "massage". It was developed about 150 years ago by Peter Ling of Sweden, who combined ancient Oriental techniques and principles with modern physiology, to promote relaxation, improve circulation and range of motion, and relieve muscle tension.

The five basic techniques used in Swedish Massage are effleurage (long, soothing strokes), petrissage (squeezing and kneading the muscles), tapotement (a repetitive striking or drumming, vibration (a trembling movement of the hands and fingertips, and friction (a circular movement around joints and tendons).

Oil is generally used for a smooth flowing movement. However, in my massages, I only use creams and lotions as I want my client's body to feel refreshed rather than oily.

The client is generally undressed but draped with sheets for both warmth and modesty, only the part of the body being worked on is exposed. In my massages, the sheet is an option.

Esalen Massage

Esalen is a hybrid style of massage that uses the techniques of Swedish Massage, Rolfing, Deep Tissue massage and others in long and flowing strokes. Esalen massage is NOT Rolfing or Deep Tissue and does not promote the deep sometimes painful finger/hand/arm strokes found in these massage methods.  It does however, utilize aspects of other modalities to achieve deep relaxation.

Swedish massage traditionally has the massager touching only one section of the body at a time. In my massages, the goal is to promote relaxation and healing by massaging all parts of the body at the same time.  An Esalen Massage is an integrated, relaxing, healing experience.

Jin Shin Jyutsu

Jin Shin MudraThis system employs sequences of meridian pressure points that are designed specifically for a particular illness. Though similar to acupressure, Jin Shin Jyutsu differs in its use of specific patterns of pressure on particular points depending on the ailment, in order to energize or enervate chi. The client generally remains clothed during a session.

A sample of this modality is offered upon request.  In my 120 minute massages, Jin Shin Jyutsu is already included.

Reiki

Japanese symbol for ReikiRei - Spirit or Universal Life
Ki - Energy

Reiki translates as "Universal Life Energy"

Reiki is a form of energy that is channeled through the hands  whenever the hands touch a living being, which brings a state of  balance to the recipient.

The feelings or sensations often felt when receiving a Reiki treatment differ from person to person.  Some of the most common feelings are:

*   Warmth or extreme heat

*   Cold or cool touch

*   Tingling and/or Vibrations

*   Incredible Relaxation

*   Meditative States

*   Release of body tensions

These are only some of the sensations experienced. Reiki energy can sometimes be very subtle, at other times it can be very strong.  You see, the Reiki energy has an intelligence of its own, it knows exactly where to go in the body and exactly how much is needed at the time.  You will ALWAYS receive only what is needed for your physical being!

These feelings often will remain with you after the treatment, for the Reiki continues to work on the body after the initial Energy Session.

First Light

Some say it is of Tibetan origin, others say it's from a more ancient time. It is perceived as a flowing of astral illumination, with positive healing light.  First Light allows one to receive powerful energies that shift the perceptions of their being - spiritual, physical, and emotional  This energy system is 'Interactive' and allows the client and the therapist to connect on a much deeper level in the healing process.

First Light can be given in varying levels from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest and strongest felt. In this way it can flow into a person at a low level, so as not to disturb their personal energies and yet work from within on stabilizing your psyche.

Ho'omana

Ho'omana (Hawaiian for "to bring forth life force energy") is sometimes referred to as Huna or Kahuna.

Huna means "secret" in Hawaii's spiritual tradition.  Kahuna means "teacher or keeper of the Huna".  Ho'omana means to make the energy flow freely.  Ho'omana is the original name for such energies, believed by some to have originated in the lost continent of Lemuria [MU].

Ho'omana places equal emphasis on connecting with your spirituality and connecting with the earth, your body, and your emotions. It is a celebration of life and a merging of matter and spirit.

Some clients feel it as a gentle breeze wafting around their body, or as an ocean current running through the body. Ho'omana energies tend to have a very subtle reaction on a client, usually producing more of a very relaxed state of being.

If you would like to learn to heal yourself and others using Ho'omana, visit our Attunement page for more information.

Sacred Light

Sacred Light connects you to the world of the "devas'. The word "Deva" comes from Sanskrit meaning "Shining One" and is usually interpreted as the angel entity of a plant, flower, herb, or tree. Sacred Light is a unique system of energetic energies transmitted by placing the hands on either side of the head. The energy that is transmitted comes from the Angels, Devas or Nature Spirits.

A plant, herb, flower or tree's energies are conveyed in a light energy form. The effect is similar to the type one receives while taking in of remedies found in Bach Flower Remedies but of a much more refined and subtle nature.

Contact can also be made with all the angels or devas of the plant world and then those energies can be 'sent' into a person.

During a Psychic Massage, Derek may use this energy to assist in your healing.

If you would like to learn to connect with and utilize Devic energy yourself, visit our Attunement page for more information.
